Reflection of Jesse Miller Lecture

I really enjoyed the lecture by Jesse Miller this week as I found him to be an engaging and knowledgeable speaker.  I think he brought up many interesting points to be considered as future teachers around the topics of digital literacy and technology use. I’ve listed some of my favorite points made by Jesse below:

  1. The idea of digital literacy, as Jesse pointed out, is a hotter topic now more than ever due to the current pandemic. Work, schooling, and entertainment have all turned to focus on online formats, forcing new learning and understanding of digital literacy.
  2. Older generations have gravitated towards using social media. Often though these people do not fully understand how social media and the internet works due to their lesser amount of experience using it, compared to younger generations. Therefore, younger generations are more capable of navigating the internet and of figuring what information shared on the internet is true, or false.
  3. We should not teach students to fear the internet or teach about the internet using fear-based education. Students are going to be online no matter what we say, so it is better to give them the tools and knowledge of how to use the internet safely, and how to make safe decisions on the internet.
  4. Kids watch adults be hypocritical about what they say/preach in regards to phone and social media use.
  5. Anything we post online can be used as ammunition against us as teachers adhering to a professional standard. Much thought should be given to what we want to share and publish about ourselves.

It was such an engaging lecture, I agree! Also, number 4 is so relevant. I feel like being told to get outside by a person sitting inside on their phone was my entire childhood.
